The Mayhue Bostic Group is based in Charlotte, NC and performs regularly at clubs, events and weddings in the area. The band is also a monthly featured artist at Cube NoDa, a regional center for the performing arts, hosting the "Jazz Jam Sessions" spotlighting the group along with guest performers. The members of my band consist of some of the finest musicians (and people) I've ever known. Some of them play with the group on a regular basis, some do not, but we all share a common love of music and I am proud to call anyone who joins our ensemble my bandmates and my friends.
 
Here is a little bit of background on some of the MBG members...

 


Dawn Nicole Anthony - Vocalist

 


Dawn Nicole Anthony, jazz aficionado, was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Atlanta, GA. She earned a BFA in music with an emphasis in vocal music from Queens University in Charlotte, NC where she has resided since 1989. Dawn has performed with Delfeayo Marsalis as a featured artist, singing the music of Duke Ellington and she has given a tribute to the legacy of Ella Fitzgerald for the Jazz Arts Initiative's Jazz Room Series at the Stage Door Theater in Charlotte. Dawn was nominated for a 'BOB' (Best of the Best) award by Charlotte Magazine for her vocal prowess and versatility. Currently, she serves as a teaching artist with Studio345 - an organization that focuses on developing and mentoring students in the creative arts.

 


Letron Brantley - Saxophone

 


Letron "LTrain" Brantley is a native of South Carolina and has been an actively performing saxophonist since he was 15-years old. He was heavily influenced by jazz, gospel and R&B music. Letron studied music at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC which allowed him to grow musically by performing with various jazz, soul and funk groups. Letron has performed with many great musicians such as jazz recording artist, Bob Mintzer; saxophonist, Lenny Picket, of the Saturday Night Live band; and gospel recording artist, Donnie McClurkin. Letron is an active music community supporter and clinician dedicated to the mission of embracing and encouraging musicians like himself to be persistent in their craft and always strive for excellence.

 


Ocie Davis - Drums

 


Ocie Davis is orginally from Los Angeles and now calls North Carolina his home. He is the Artistic Director of The Jazz Arts Initiative, a non-profit organization promoting youth jazz studies, located in Charlotte. Ocie graduated from the University of New Orleans and is a former adjunct professor of Virginia Tech. He has performed with pianist, Ellis Marsalis; trumpeters, Terence Blanchard and Christian Scott; multi-instrumentalist, Nicholas Payton; and saxophonist, Donald Harrison, who called him "one of the premier drummers in jazz."

 


John Simmons - Piano

 


John Simmons is a native New Yorker and a retired New York City Police Sergeant who majored in Business Administration at Baruch College in NY while studying music theory and jazz studies. Additionally, he studied Human Resource Management at Pace University in NY. John performed for the Barry Harris Jazz Workshop in New York City for ten years. Currently, he is a piano instructor at the Ballantyne School of Music in Charlotte NC. John has performed solo jazz piano at the Wine Room at Afton Village in Concord, NC. Also, he has performed gospel music at the McGlohon Theatre, Blumenthal Performing Arts and at local churches in Charlotte.
